November 25, 1949 - November 03, 2024
Sidney “Sid” Broughton (74) of Silver Springs, New York passed away peacefully on November 3rd, 2024, with loving family by his side, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Sid was born November 25, 1949, in Warsaw NY to Merritt W. Jr. and Helen (Chamberlain) Broughton. His childhood, spent alongside his older brothers on the family farm, instilled a lifelong passion for family, agriculture, and red tractors. Soon after graduating from Letchworth Central School in 1967, he began a career in diesel mechanics which led to opening “Sid’s Repair” in 1972. Throughout his life, Sid was a hard worker and held various positions within mechanical and agricultural industries. He was a devoted member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Silver Springs and had a deep faith in the Lord.
Sid loved tractor pulling; for as kind and humble as he was, he was highly respected both in the repair business and on the pulling track. A “Desperado” in the field, his knowledge and commitment led to much success on both the state and national levels. Many would agree that his contributions and advancements helped to shape the sport into what it is today. Sid’s family was by his side and shared in the love of tractor pulling serving various roles as pit crew, riding with him to and from pulls to keep him awake, and fulfilling roles within the pulling world.
He served as president of the Western New York Tractor Pullers Association (WNYTPA) and Empire State Pullers (ESP). He was also involved with ATPA, Pro-Pulling League, NTPA, and Wolverine Pullers spanning over 60 years. Sid enjoyed traveling to Florida with his family, where he was able to relax, taking frequent trips to Dairy Queen, going on walks and bike rides, having cookouts, and playing badminton. He loved spending time with his family, especially his four grandsons teaching them how to fix things and demonstrated a strong work ethic.
Sid was preceded in death by his parents, brother James, brother Phillip, father-in-law Gerald Graham, and brother-in-law Jacques Schmit. He is survived by his wife Darlene “Jeannie” (Graham), daughters Amberley (Daryl) Robb and Mindy (Rob) Trowbridge, his brothers, Merritt III “Pete” (Kay), Colin, Randy (Becky), and grandsons Levi Durand and Grayson Robert Trowbridge of South Haven, Michigan, as well as Alexander Ralph and Oliver James Robb of Warsaw, mother-in-law Madeline (Ess), sisters-in-law Deborah Graham Schmit, Mary (Bruce) Carney, Sandra (Brent Maines) Graham, brother-in-law, Gerald “Sam” Graham, several nieces and nephews, and numerous friends nationwide.
A special thank you to Sid’s brother Colin and niece Kelly (Doug) Hendrickson, the home care team they provided, Bettina Broughton for her guidance during Sid’s illness, and WCCHS for the care and support during Sid’s final days.
His family finds comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on through the knowledge he shared and the memories we will cherish forever.
