John graduated in 1969 from Kenmore East High School in Tonawanda, NY where his family relocated after he was born. He was a life-long, die- hard fan of the Bills and the Sabres and later the Celtics. In the spring of 1972 John served as an Intern at the United States Department of the Treasury and for Robert Eckhardt (D) TX while an undergraduate. He was passionate about politics and world events and could argue his view vehemently. While at CMU he was also a Candidate for Ph.D. in Economics and taught courses in both Microeconomic Theory and Benefit-Cost Analysis.
In 1979 John married Patricia Griffin of Smethport, PA in Pittsburgh. They subsequently moved to NYC in 1981 where he joined the Economics Department of W. R. Grace and Co. and in 1985 became the Associate Economist for Loomis, Sayles & Company Inc. in Boston, MA. He retired as the Chief Economist, Vice-President and Oil Analyst for Loomis, Sayles in 2008.
He was born December 12, 1951 in Montgomery, AL and was the oldest child of Harold F. and Mary P. (Carroll) Zaehringer. He is survived by his wife of 44 years; his son Benjamin Zaehringer of Houston, TX, his daughters Melody (Josh Sroka) Zaehringer of Burnt Hills, NY, and Tiffany Zaehringer of Newtonville, MA; his sisters Ellen (Jay Gach) Zaehringer of Long Beach, NY, Susan (James) Bednarek of Cornish, ME, his brother William (Marcy) Zaehringer of Tonawanda, NY; and dozens of in-laws, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A gathering to celebrate John’s life will be held this coming summer at his home in North Java. It was John’s wish that in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
