Our hero, Eddy Burns, gained his angel wings after a brief illness at the age of 77. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on January 23, 2026, at the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo.
Eddy was born on June 23, 1948, in Warsaw, son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Calmes Burns. He was a 1966 graduate of Letchworth Central School and after high school, would go on to earn a trade school degree. Shortly after completing trade school Eddy would be drafted to serve in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Eddy would gain the rank of Specialist 5 and was the recipient of the Bronze Star. After proudly serving his country, Eddy would find employment with Griffith Energy where he worked for almost forty years before retiring in 2016. He was a member of the American Legion Bates-Courtney Post #105. Eddy also enjoyed photography and NASCAR racing.
He is predeceased by his parents and his brother, Alan Burns.
Eddy is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Joyce Rutherford Burns of Castile; his children, Lisa (Tim) Schultz of Warsaw, NY, Barbra (Tony) Moens of Port St. Lucie, FL, Brandon (Amanda) Burns of Cape Coral, FL, Jason (Jessica) Burns of Wyoming, NY; his grandchildren, Lauren, Sam, Dylan, Andrew, Noah, Reagan, Hayden, Bryleigh, and Brooklyn; his sisters, Lindley Tepley of Colorado and Sandra Mandzuk of Oregon.
A celebration of life with an American Legion service for Eddy will be held on Friday, January 30, 2026, at 3 PM at the Wolf Creek Event Center, 12 S. Main St., Castile, NY. Burial will be made on Monday, February 2, 2026, at the Western New York National Cemetery, 1254 Indian Falls Rd., Corfu, NY. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Castile Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 338, Castile, NY 14427 or Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center at give.roswellpark.org.
