Age 73, of Warsaw, passed away on August 30, 2020 at Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.
He was born on October 12, 1946 in Warsaw, son of the late Thomas and Judith Harcleroad McGuire. Deacon Dan was a graduate of Warsaw Central School Class of 1965. He received an associate degree from Genesee Community College and was a graduate of the Christ the King Seminary Deaconate Program. He proudly served in the US Army from 1968-70.
Dan served as a Deacon with St. Isidore’s Parish in Perry and Silver Springs for twenty-one years and then at St. Michael’s Parish in Warsaw for the last two years. In earlier years, Dan worked in quality control for Ness Precision in Warsaw prior to their closing. He then worked as maintenance director for The Cloisters in Warsaw and as Chaplain at the Wyoming County Nursing Facility in Warsaw and the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility.
Dan was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Church in Warsaw and was past President of the former St. Michael’s School Board of Education. He was a member of the church choir and served as a Eucharistic minister particularly enjoying ministering to the area shut in community and the elderly. Dan was a recipient of the Diocese of Buffalo St. Joseph’s Award in 1987. He was also a longtime member of the Knights of Columbus (4th degree).
He was a member of the Walter Klein American Legion Post in Warsaw where he served as the post chaplain. He was also the local chairman for Boys State. Dan was an active mentor to Boy Scout Troop 4033 for several years and was counselor for the Ad Altare Dei Award through the Diocese of Buffalo. Dan enjoyed music and was a former member of the Warsaw Barbershoppers and as a member of his high school choir, performed at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York.
Deacon Dan was a dedicated family man and was involved in every way in his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, whether it was school or sporting events or scouting. He was an outdoors person who loved hunting and fishing. Dan was an avid euchre player as well. He raised turkeys for thirty years and sold Christmas trees for many years. Dan also loved his time playing Santa Claus for the residents of The Cloisters.
Surviving are his wife of fifty-two years, Linda Benz McGuire; his children, Daniel (Linda) McGuire of Mt. Airy, MD, Rebecca (Brian) Litz of Beaver Dams, NY, Kelly (Kevin) Yao of Mt. Airy, MD, Shawn (Jessica) McGuire of Warsaw; grandchildren, Colleen and Daniel McGuire, Ashley (Dylan) Eaton, Collin and Connor Merkle, Kristin (Seth) Croft, Holly (Ben) Peterson, Kaida Yao, Nathan, Nicholas and Thomas McGuire; his brother, Thomas (Carolyn) McGuire of Chandler, AZ; several nieces, nephews and in laws.
There will be a time for public viewing on Thursday, September 3 from 3 – 6:30 at St. Michael’s Church, 171 N. Main St., Warsaw. The recitation of the rosary will begin at 6:15 PM followed by an American Legion service at 6:30 PM followed by a Deaconate Prayer service at 6:45 PM. The church will be limited to 33% capacity and masks are required due to Covid 19 restrictions. Deacon Dan’s private Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, September 4 at 10 AM at St. Michael’s Church. The public may view a live stream of Deacon Dan’s services on the Parish Community of St. Michael Facebook page.
