Al spent his childhood on the family farm in East Prussia before heading west to avoid the surge of incoming Russian soldiers at age 12. The family resided in several locations before settling in south west Germany. Alfred attended agricultural technical college at the age of 16 for 2 years. This included an apprenticeship. During the apprenticeship he worked on a farm that traditionally grew hops and was converting many acres of a hillside to cherry trees. He then went on to manage a farm for a widow before sailing to America in April 1954.

After farming Al went to work for Don Beck, Inc . first in Silver Springs, then in Castile as their parts man. Following retirement Alfred wanted to keep busy, so for 15 years he drove school bus for Wyoming Central School. He enjoyed driving bus and in general enjoyed his work life.
Alfred enjoyed time with family the most. He enjoyed helping his family, getting together for birthdays and holidays and all the special events that life brings. Alfred’s contribution to the parties were often his apple crisp or zucchini bread. When the grand children were small he always had in the refrigerator his grandpa juice for them, and when they were older he had the fixings for a Rattler available.
