Adele Kunze

Adele Ursula Magdalene Anna (von der Goltz) Kunze, 95, of Wyoming, NY passed peacefully early Wednesday morning October 1, 2026 at Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry, NY in the company of her loving family. She is at peace with the Lord in Heaven. She was one of God’s angels.

Adele was born August 25, 1931 in Konigsberg, Germany, growing up on her family’s multi-generational farm estate called Compehner Farm which had a diversity of livestock and crops including a 60-cow dairy, horses raised for breeding, and much land. WWII was winding down and Russia wasn’t wasting any time in infiltrating all of eastern Germany with brutal soldiers who would do tremendous harm to people and animals and burn down their buildings. So, in January 1945, Adele at age 13, along with her 3 younger siblings, and their large family had to leave this beautiful peaceful farm and head west for safety. The next goal would be to escape further west to flee from Russian Communist rule, and ultimately cross over into free West Germany. There were many complications during this chaotic time. Adele met Rudolf, her husband to be, in the late 1940’s while working on nearby neighboring farms in Holstein, a province in northwestern Germany. They became engaged and separately each were able to find immigration sponsors near Leroy, NY. Adele arrived 2 years after Rudolf. They married January 31, 1953. They would spend 9 years working for various local farmers and were able to purchase their existing farm in 1962, which they named New Compehner Farm in remembrance of the farm in East Prussia.

Adele became an avid dairy farmer along with Rudolf and they made a great team living out their dream of farming in the “land of opportunity and freedom.” Adele loved animals and had great compassion for every one of her cows. She also became very dedicated to the Registered Holstein breed. She kept meticulous records on the dairy herd and eventually they were able to market their excess high-pedigreed Holstein bred heifers locally and to several foreign countries.

Adele was a staunch supporter of many worthwhile initiatives, donating wherever she could. Her compassion for friends, and people she didn’t even know, and animals, was heartwarming. Her devotion to writing cards of thanks, get well, sympathy, congratulations, etc. was impeccable. She volunteered and was involved with several organizations including AFS Exchange Student Program, Wyoming County Holstein Assoc., Farm Bureau, Cooperative Extension, and several others. Adele has been a 40-year member of the Warsaw United Church of Christ. Adele and Rudolf thoroughly enjoyed the many meetings of the Wyoming County Kitchen Konference – where many farm couples would meet monthly for a potluck dinner at each other’s homes. She loved flowers and gardening as well, and passed that gene to her three children. She and Rudolf enjoyed taking an annual trip to visit relatives in Germany and to explore several new places throughout North America, Europe, and Costa Rica. Though German descendants, they were extremely patriotic and proud to be US citizens.

Adele is survived by her three children: Ursula (Bill) Fuest of Pavilion, Monika (Lou) Ghise of Wyoming, and Hans (Leslie) Kunze of Wyoming, her beloved sister-in-law in Germany, Gisi Frfr. von der Goltz, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Germany, England, and Switzerland.

Adele (Oma) will be deeply missed by her 8 grandchildren: Gretchen (Jacob) Cone, Lisa (Peter) Cunningham, Nick (Holly) Fuest, Alison (Mark) Turoldo, Ben (Ashley Toombs) Ghise, Karl Kunze, Mary (Aaron Westine) Kunze, and Grace (Mike Oliphant) Kunze and her 7 great grandchildren: Caleb and Kiptyn Cone, Brooklyn and Stella Cunningham, Will and Josh Fuest, and Simon Turoldo.

Adele was predeceased by her husband, Rudolf Kunze. They had been married 62 years until his death in 2015. She was also predeceased by her parents Gert Frhr. and Ursula Frfr. von der Goltz, her 3 siblings, Erik Frhr. (Barbara) von der Goltz, Almut (Udo) Wachenhusen, and Bernd Frhr. von der Goltz, all of Germany. She was also predeceased by her brother-in-law Werner (Amalia) Kunze of Warsaw, NY and her sister-in-law Annemarie (Uwe) Redeker of Germany, and many more relatives throughout Germany.
