William H. Shumaker

Age 72, of Orangeville, passed away on September 11, 2021 in the Town of Machias, NY from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident.

He was born May 21, 1949 in Warsaw, son of the late Alfred and Pauline Beaumont Shumaker. Bill was a graduate of Warsaw Central School Class of 1967; received his Associates degree from Alfred State College and his Bachelor’s degree from Roberts Wesleyan College. He spent his entire life on the family farm as a third generation dairy farmer. He also worked for many years as a labor services officer for the New York State Department of Labor. Bill continued to enjoy farming and was currently working for Flint’s Dairy Farm in the Town of Orangeville. Bill belonged to the Farm Bureau, the Dairyman’s League and the Upstate Milk Cooperative. He was involved for many years with 4-H and the Dairyman’s League Young Cooperators. He served his community as a former member of the Orangeville Town Board and served as a member of the Town of Orangeville Zoning Board of Appeals. Bill was a member of the United Church of Warsaw, a fifty year member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #560 in Warsaw and a member of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club.

Consistent with his dedicated service to the community, Bill was a thirty-five year member of the Warsaw Fire Department where he was currently serving as Department Treasurer. For sixteen of those years, Bill served as a Lieutenant and Captain of the Erie Hose Company. He was a seventeen year member of the Warsaw Rescue Squad where he was a recipient of the Top Responder Award on multiple occasions. Bill was a two-time recipient of the department’s G.W. Bush Award in 2007 and 2018 for outstanding service to the Emergency Medical Service. In 2021, Bill received the EMS Responder of the Year Award from the Wyoming County Volunteer Firemen’s Association. He was also a member and past officer of the Warsaw Fire Police.

Bill loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter and also enjoyed camping. Along with his wife, Judy, he enjoyed playing euchre with family and friends as well as traveling across the country.

Surviving are his wife of forty-seven years, Judith Hotchkiss Shumaker, whom he married on March 15, 1974; his children, Kristin (Nathan) Merle of Holley, Jason (Kim) Shumaker of Avon; stepchildren, Terry (Kathy) Brown of Spencerport, Tami (Joe) Manard of Niceville, FL; his grandchildren, Kara Brown, Rachel Brown, Nicole Manard, Desiree` Manard, Cody Manard, Allison Merle, Mason Merle, Julia Shumaker, Anna Shumaker; his siblings, Donna (David) Treaster of Lewistown, PA, Carol Shumaker of Tucson, AZ, George (Nancy) Shumaker of Statesboro, GA, LaRayne Sue (the late Anthony) Urbanczyk of Adams Center, NY, Mary Alice (Dennis) Coates of Catonsville, MD; several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Friday, October 15 from 1 – 4 & 7 – 9 PM at the Robinson & Hackemer Funeral Home, 246 N. Main St., Warsaw where Bill’s memorial service will be held Saturday, October 16 at 11 AM. There will be a Fireman’s Memorial service on Friday, October 15 at 6:45 PM at the funeral home. Private burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery (Dutch Flats), Orangeville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Warsaw Rescue Squad, PO Box 22, Warsaw, NY 14569 or the Warsaw Fire Department, PO Box 229, Warsaw, NY 14569. The family asks for continued prayers for Bill’s wife Judy in her recovery efforts from injuries sustained in the accident.
