Harvey R. Granite

November 23, 1927 - January 23, 2019

arvey Renwick Granite, 91, passed away at his home on January 23, 2019. Predeceased by his father Albert Granite; mother Martha (Potter) Granite; sister Judith (Granite) Beldock; and brother ?Buddy? Granite, Harvey leaves behind his life companion of 38 years, Patricia Meek; two daughters, Deborah Granite and Tamara (Granite) Seidman; three grandchildren, Eric (Teri Riker) Rabinowitz, Katharine Rabinowitz, and Zachary Murstein; two great grandchildren, Adrian and Caitlyn Rabinowitz; devoted friend, Mark Hall; several cousins; and many close friends and ?acquired? family from around the world.

Harvey was born November 23, 1927, in Rochester, New York. A 1949 alumnus of Cornell University with a B.A. in English, he chose to become a union worker and organizer before beginning his first job as an educator in the Rochester City School District. He was awarded a John Hays Fellowship in 1963 for study at Columbia University and, later, pursued his doctoral degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. He dedicated his life to education: as a father, grandfather, teacher, public school administrator, college professor, community advocate, and mentor to a legion of inquiring minds. His love of books is legendary. An overflowing collection of tens of thousands took center stage in every room throughout his home. He was also an accomplished playwright and published author.

Harvey lived each day to the fullest. He shared?with virtually everyone he met?his passion for and vast knowledge of the current political climate, nature, the arts?including opera, classical music, movies, writing, as well as virtually every other aspect of the humanities. One of the founders of the Osher Lifelong Learning Center at Rochester Institute of Technology, Harvey conveyed his love of Shakespeare to the center?s members. He will be missed by so many for whom his warmth, humor, and love are irreplaceable.

No funeral services are planned; however, a celebration of Harvey?s life will be announced here in the near future. Contributions in Harvey?s memory may be sent to the Gainesville Public Library, 10 Church Street, Silver Springs, NY 14550, or to the Warsaw Historical Society, 15 Perry Avenue, Warsaw, NY. 14569.
