Alfred H. Loomis

January 29, 1925 - August 9, 2016

Age 91, of Castile, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2016 at the East Side Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Warsaw surrounded by his loving family.

He was born January 29, 1925 in Castile, son of the late George and Mildred Elwell Loomis. Alfred was a graduate of Castile High School Class of 1943. He was a proud veteran of the US Army having served during World War II. He was a staff sergeant serving overseas in England, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Omaha Beach and Czechoslovakia. Alfred was the recipient of two bronze stars.

Mr. Loomis began working on local farms at the age of fifteen. He drove truck and worked at Elitsac Company in Castile in earlier years. Alfred worked for over forty-one years at Letchworth Central School where he worked as a bus driver, bus mechanic, and in the maintenance department. He also served as an attendance officer at the school for many years. Following his retirement from the school, he served as a bank courier at Wyoming County Bank and Pavilion State Bank.

Alfred was a seventy year member of the Wallace-Jeffers American Legion Post in Castile and was a longtime member of the Wyoming Valley Region of the Antique Auto Club of America.

Surviving are his wife of sixty-five years, Louise Dake Loomis whom he married on June 2, 1951; his sons, James (Marlene) Loomis of Castile, Gary (Rita) Loomis of Castile; his grandchildren, Genevieve (Christopher) Griesbaum, Rebecca (Phil) Vasile, Sheri (Daniel) Brandes, Heidi (Jud) Stroud, Christopher Loomis; great grandchildren, Mandy (fiance Chad Kirby) Vasile, Tony Vasile, Kelcy and Emily Brandes, Easton Stroud; several nieces and nephews.

There are no calling hours. Alfred?s funeral service will be held Friday, August 12 at 11 AM at the Castile United Church of Christ (Washington & N. Main Sts.), Castile. Private interment will be in Grace Cemetery, Castile. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Wallace-Jeffers American Legion Post, Castile, NY 14427 or East Side Nursing Home Sunshine Fund, 62 Prospect St., Warsaw, NY 14569. Arrangements are being completed by Harmon-Watson Funeral Home, Castile.

I’m so sorry to hear about Al’s passing.  I have so many great memories of growing up on Beechwood Avenue.  The Loomis family was at the center of activity there.  I remember your Dad’s passion for his antique cars.  You were all so caring for him in his last years when his health failed.  My thoughts are with you at this time.
